Foreword by Mario Andretti

Mario Andretti
(Scuderia Ferrari Formula One driver 1971-1972 & 1978 Formula One World Champion with Lotus)
The Ferrari world loved Luigi Chinetti and that includes me.
In 1965, I was 25 years old and working as hard as I could to claw my way up the ranks in racing. Suddenly and so unexpected, I got a call from Luigi and he asked if I would like to drive at Bridgehampton in a CanAm event, in a 330 LM Ferrari.
Are you kidding? Yes I’ll do it. Ferrari meant everything to me. As a child growing up in Italy, I was a true fan, with pure love of everything Ferrari. To get a call from one of the most influential people in the Ferrari inner circle was incredible. I felt Luigi could possibly be my channel to the Ferrari factory team. It was well known that he was one of Enzo Ferrari’s most trusted friends. I saw it as Luigi opening a door for me. This would be my very first time driving a Ferrari. And also my very first sportscar ride.
Luigi guaranteed me $500 starting money. Typical in those days. What he didn’t know is that I was so excited to have this chance that I would have done it for free.
About halfway through the race I was running 3rd and the clutch went and I didn’t finish. Before I left the track, he asked, how many kids do you have? I said, I have two toddlers, Michael is three and Jeff is one. And he gave me $1000, five hundred for each kid.
Throughout my career, I kept in touch with Luigi. I had the utmost respect and admiration for him. I was happy to be able to convey my gratitude so many years later when I would talk to him. Gratitude for offering me the ride and the gesture of the extra money.
After Bridgehampton, I drove two more times for Luigi’s Ferrari North American Racing Team, at the 24 Hours of Daytona (finishing 4th) and Sebring 12 Hours (DNF), both with Pedro Rodriguez.

The Ferrari 330 America if it is unknown to the public, however, deserves to be a Ferrari in its own right. Often seen as the interim model between the 250 GTE and the 330 GT 2+2, it remains a mystery as it has a body of the 250 GTE Series III Pininfarina with a 4-liter Colombo 12-cylinder engine derived from the 400 Superamerica. Rare car because only 50 were built by Pininfarina on the initiative of Luigi Chinetti, the famous Ferrari importer located on the East Coast of the USA with his company Luigi Chinetti Motors Inc. of Manhattan, New York. This unique book is a tribute to Luigi Chinetti, the first man who was able to convince with charisma and enthusiasm Enzo Ferrari on Christmas eve 1946 to become a real car manufacturer. Ferrari’s history with Chinetti will remain inseparable forever.
