This book pays tribute to Alfredo Ferrari (nicknamed Alfredino « little Alfredo » in Italian or Dino), the son of Enzo Ferrari, who died prematurely at the age of 24 from a degenerative disease called Duchesne’s muscular dystrophy.

Dino began his studies in finance, then in mechanical engineering in Switzerland (he obtained his engineering degree at the Corni Technical Institute in Modena). He had proposed as his thesis for his engineering exam the project of a small 4-cylinder 1500 cc engine with two overhead camshafts and three valves per cylinder. And shortly before his death, he worked with his father at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, participating in the design of the Ferraris of the time, and, with Ferrari engine chiefs Vittorio Jano, Gioacchino Colombo, or Aurelio Lampredi, in the design of the Ferrari V12 Colombo engine (1947), Ferrari V12 Lampredi engine (1950), Ferrari V12 Jano engine (1956), as well as in the design in particular of the « Ferrari Dino engine ».
Enzo Ferrari experienced a very difficult first few months of 1956. Dino, his only son, aged 24, was at his worst; there was no hope of saving him. From this terrible ordeal, Enzo Ferrari, who had faith, rose up, rolled up his sleeves, never gave up the fight, and believed in his men above all else. All of them, both those who raced and those who worked in his workshops, believed in him.
There was no register in the Ferrari literature on the complete production of road Dinos specifying the version, production date, colors and dealers/ importers. The result of a long period of research and discussions with French historians who have since passed away, such as Antoine Prunet and Jess G. Pourret, led me to this conclusion. The idea behind this new work was not to rewrite a book on the history of the Dino, but rather to effectively provide additional information for Dino enthusiasts and owners, as well as for automotive professionals.
The Dino has a breathtaking line, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Ferrari designs signed by Aldo Brovarone for Pininfarina, which will enjoy commercial success. 4067 units will be produced from 1968 to 1974. It’s clear that the Dino was made popular, no doubt, thanks to the legendary British television show The Persuaders, in which Tony Curtis, aka Danny Wilde, drove a Dino 246 GT Series L, s/n 00810, loaned by the Ferrari factory in agreement with the production company for the filming of the 24 episodes in 1970.
Buona lettura,
Cyrille Jaquinot
